I believe my personal interests contribute to my ability to be an effective teacher. For example, I enjoy reading and I like to garden. Reading allows me to see the world from different perspectives, as well as constantly improving my own language skills. Gardening, for me, is a bit more metaphoric. Students in my class are like a plant; the seed is planted, provided with the nourishment and nurturing required for it to grow, and eventually blooms or matures. I hope that my teaching will provide the soil, water, light and air needed for my students to grow.

We can think of ourselves not as teachers but as gardeners. A gardener does not 'grow' flowers; he tries to give them what he thinks they need and they grow by themselves. ~John Holt
